The text of her obituary from the Douglas County Herald dated 16 February 1933:

Mrs. Mary L. Gentry was born October 12, 1840, in Marshall County, Tennessee, and died 2/13/1933, age 92 years, 4 months, 1 day. She was married in 1854 to Edward Talley. To this union four children were born, all of whom survive, Mrs. Amanda Buchanan, Sperry, OK; Robert Talley, Belle Plains, KS; Bettie Williamson, Ava, MO; and Emmer Ruhl, Springfield, MO. Following the death of her husband, she was married again in 1880 to Oliver Gentry, and after his death, made her home with her children, lately with her daughter, Emmer, in Springfield. She had enjoyed exceptionally good health all her life and was ill only a short time. She was a member of the Christian Church. She leaves besides her children, 16 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren, and 22 gr-gr-grandchildren. Short funeral services were held in Springfield with 6 grandchildren acting as pall bearers; Mattie McDaniel, Annie Smith, Ethel Bishop, Mary Groce, Maud Chapman, and Lola Cullison. The body was then removed to the Gentry cemetery, west of Ava, where burial took place with 6 grandsons as pall bearers: Charley Gentry, Hobart Gentry, Oscar Gentry, Preston Gentry, Edgar Hartley, and J. E. Williamson.

Deaths

Mrs. Bert Nichols

Mrs. Mattie Johnson Nichols, widow of the late Bert Nichols, died this morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Reid at 511 Twenty-fourth street, where she has made her home the past year.

Mrs. Nichols was born April 4, 1867, and has resided in Cairo for the past 56 years.

She leaves to mourn her death, a daughter, Mrs. S. T. Rumsey of Decatur, Ill, two sons, T. V. Nichols and Bert Nichols of St. Louis, also a nephew, Leroy Johnson of Cairo.

Her husband, the late Bert Nichols, died eight years ago, having served on the police force here for thirty-five years.

Mrs. Nichols was an active member of the Cairo Baptist church and attended the Missionary society when her health permitted. She was a cheerful worker of the Amoma Sunday school class.

The body will be sent to Miller, Ohio, for burial. Friends of Mrs. Nichols may call at the Agey-Stainforth Mortuary to view the remains between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. today.

Mrs. Lillie Barnes of Olmstead, a lifelong friend of Mrs. Nichols, was called, arriving here this morning.

Rev. W. C. Hart will conduct a brief prayer service at the funeral home at 8:45 o'clock tonight.

The husband in this family has been listed in census and various records as Limon, Lemon, Lemmon, L. S., Lehman and Leman. I tried putting a copy of their marriage record at the top of this page, but it was too light to read. His name was spelled both Lehman and Leman in the one record! Ethel lived with Henry and Mary Ann Buchanan, her paternal grandparents. Emmer worked in other people's homes to support them. She made a dollar a week. My dad used to tell us that in his family was a doctor who went to work among the American Indians. His favorite story was when the doctor was eating with the Indians and complimented the meat and asked what it was. The Indian said, "Um, rat good."  

The family all thought the doctor was Nellie's father, but census tells me her father was a house carpenter and laborer. But there was an Emmons Laney in Kansas whose father was a doctor...could he and E. P. Laney be one and the same? I'll keep looking.

Someone in the Silies family (Nellie's second husband or one of her children) used to call E. P. Laney the cowboy.

Mystery Photo

I've had a copy of this picture in my possession for many years. I believe he is related to Mary Ellen Laney Henkey. I always thought it was L. S. Spriggs, Mary Ellen's grandfather. Then the mustache made me think it could be E. P. Laney, Mary Ellen's father. He was from Kansas and once referred to as a cowboy. For all I know, it could be some famous stage actor from back then. If anyone knows, please tell me.

Update: This picture was recently added to Ancestry.com under the name of Charles E. Spriggs. Charles was the brother of Nellie Spriggs, so this would be the uncle of Mary Ellen Laney. November 13, 2018

Notes on George Delbert Nichols

Vera Nichols Rumsey, George Delbert's daughter, left my mother some pages of

family history she wrote. In them, she wrote this about her father:

"They named him George Adelbert. He did not like Adelbert so they called him in early youth "Bert Nichols". He signed his name George Delbert Nichols, as Grandma allowed him to dismiss the A on Adelbert, but insisted it was Geo. Delbert. So I guess that is why he started plain Bert. To everyone he was Bert Nichols but his obituary read George D. Nichols (Bert) died---etc. He and my mother Mattie Nichols are buried at Millers, Ohio. the graveyard of the Nichols family."

"Of course you all remember Alvia Nichols, who visited St Louis, Mo. He is the son of Frank Nichols, brother to Bert Nichols, Cairo, Ill. Alvia lived in Huntington, W. Va. When Dad was taken to Millers to be buried (Millers is across the river from Huntington, W. Va.), Alvia took the body to his Methodist church in Huntington, and the police force there all turned out to escort the body to the church. Mamma said the preacher gave a wonderful talk and said any man who was on the police force for 37 years deserved the best."

Also in the history: "George Delbert, "Bert" was a Police Officer for 37 years in Cairo. worked from six am to 6 pm. Was just plain, solid, honest. Worked every day, never had Sunday off. Had no time to go to church. He was 6 ft. one inch tall, beautiful blue eyes, his teeth so straight and strong that he lifted me from the floor by his teeth while I was in a blanket, weighing 110."

"Bert and Mattie Nichols were buried in the Nichols family lot at Millers, Ohio, where Sarah Francis and Joseph, parents of Bert are buried."

I took a copy of his obituary to my aunt and uncle's 50th wedding anniversary party. Uncle Bert told me how his grandpa used to throw the billy club at a man's feet. It would tangle up his feet and make him fall, thus allowing him to get caught.

George Delbert Nichols Obituary

From the Saturday, February 9, 1929 edition of the Cairo Evening Citizen and Bulletin:

'Bert' Nichols, Veteran Police Officer, Passes

Served City For 37 Years Faithfully As Patrolman

No more picturesque character ever walked a police beat in Cairo than "Bert" Nichols during his service over a third of a century. He was recognized by his superior officers and his compatriots as a man and officer of absolute honesty and a "square shooter" in every sense of the word. Through changing administrations and upheaval in the police department, "Bert" continued to walk his beat unscathed.

"Bert's" theory was that a good policeman was not always the one who made the most arrests. He believed it was an officer's duty to give friendly advice to bring about the peaceful settlement of neighborhood quarrels and avoid arrests if possible in these lesser disturbances, although he showed no such leniency to the real criminal.

Absolutely Fearless

Fearless almost to the degree of foolhardiness, "Bert" was ever an enigma and a source of wonderment to his brother officers. He was careless to a fault in what is considered the most important factor contributing to an officer's personal safety, that of being properly armed. Cairo chiefs of the police department down through the decades wore themselves down trying to make Patrolman Nichols carry a gun regularly, but always without success.

This officer would go out after a dangerous criminal with only his club and at times would be without this lowly weapon. Many tales as to his prowess with the "billy" were told by his brother officers, many of whom have long been dead. In his younger days when he was strong physically and a perfect example of health and vigor, he was credited with the ability to throw his club with as much accuracy as some officers could shoot.

Great Physical Vigor

His physical endurance was a puzzle to other officers. During the coldest weather he would not wear an overcoat or gloves, and hated to don these encumbering accoutrements even after a long period of illness three years ago, from which he had never been expected to recover. He was a close friend of Uncle Abe Houglas, who had also served most of his life on the Cairo police force before he resigned as desk clerk at the beginning of the present city administration.

Patrolman Nichols was widely read and could talk with an uncanny understanding on all current subjects, and was hard to beat in an argument. His favorite subject was Socialism, which he strongly defended in countless discussions with brother officers and citizens.

Funeral Today

Funeral services for this veteran police officer, who died Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his home, 2310 Washington avenue, were held this afternoon at 4:15 o'clock at the residence, the Rev. W. C. Hart, pastor of the Cairo Baptist church, officiating.

The body will be taken to Millers, O., former home of Mr. Nichols, leaving here at 5:30 o'clock this evening, and interment probably will be made there Monday.

Members of the police force served as active pallbearers at the funeral, and the services were largely attended.

Some Explanations

• In some places I have more than one date or name, because sometimes that is what I find in my research. For instance, Mary Ellen Henkey's gravestone has a birthyear of 1896 while in the 1900 census it is listed as 1893. I'm not exactly sure which one is correct, so I will list both.
• There are times, as in the case of Eva Catherine Gadell Henkey, where I don't know if the first name is Eva or if it's Catherine. The person would go by one name for a time, and later change to the other. So without a birth certificate, I will just hope I get it right.
• Please let me know of any mistakes and I will correct them asap.
• Millers and Millersport are alternate unofficial names for Miller, Lawrence County, Ohio. There is a town named Millersport, but that's in another part of the state.
• Women will be labeled with their maiden name only. I think that will be easier.
